Free Money by Kevin Trudeau: My Thoughts

I recently purchased a copy of the book Free Money “They” Don’t Want You to Know About by Kevin Trudeau, and I thought I would offer up my thoughts on the text in a little review. Basically, I ordered this book because my debt has recently become overwhelming. I rarely make enough in a month to cover all of my expenses, so I was relying on my credit cards to make up the difference. I would use credit cards for everything from meals and groceries to gas to entertainment (like movies). Add to this the fact that I’ve had over $5,000 in debt on my cards since college, just sitting there and accumulating interest, and you have the recipe for some serious trouble. The more I charge, the higher my minimum payments became, and lately it’s been a challenge even to make the minimums. I recently turned 30, and I would love to be able to buy a home, but how could I finance it if I can’t even pay for food and gas without reaching for the plastic? Naturally, when I saw a commercial for Kevin Trudeau’s Free Money book, it seemed like a great opportunity to fix my cash flow problems.

Trudeau’s Free Money claims to provide information about where to find “money you don’t have to pay back,” unlike a loan. It sounds pretty scammy (and there are a lot of free money scams out there), but as far as I can tell, his actual suggestions seem legit. Contrary to what you may think, free money actually does exist – mostly in the form of government grants, which you can apply for if you need extra help with buying a home, starting your own business, or even resolving your debt. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that you’ll be awarded these grants, but if you’re in serious trouble it could definitely be worth a shot. There’s also mention of finding free money for school in the form of grants and scholarships, which is information that I really wish I had had access to before I took out thousands of dollars in student loans right after high school!

If you already have healthy finances and a strong understanding of economics, Trudeau’s book is probably not for you. His advice is pretty basic, and a lot of his tips could seem obvious to people with experience in money matters. But for the rest of us, I think Free Money has something valuable to offer: An overview of creative ways to help yourself solve your money problems without incurring additional debt through loans. Get past the exploitative-sounding title and you just might find something of real worth in the pages of this book.
